What you prolly don't know about the Southern Bicol Region

And for my last blog post, tidbits of trivia that your probably don't know about the Southern Bicol Region. Well, you may probably know, but still, wouldn't it be fun to compile all the cheesy trivia? :)

Did you know that...

About 49 eruptions have been documented since its first blast in 1616. Worst eruption occurred was on February 1, 1814 wherein about 12,000 people evacuated in Cagsawa and sought refuge inside the church but lost their lives as the town was flooded with lava and also destroyed the church. Hence, the church tower was the only thing that remains and become a tourist spot and known as the Cagsawa Ruins. (Source: philippinetouristattractions.com)

Shop 'til you drop in Region 5!

Every time I see the word "shopping" I automatically feel giddy and happy, so much that my wallpaper says "Keep Calm and Go Shopping" so I know I'll have a good time writing this post! :)

Whenever I go on a trip to a tourist destination, I make sure I leave with souvenirs with me. At least I have a concrete memorabilia from the place, not just pictures. Also, as a tourism major, I know how badly the locals need money from the tourists (hello, multiplier effect!)

 Sili Key chain

When you hear the word "Bicol" you will most likely associate it with "Bicol Express", right? Or is it just me? Haha. Anyway, since Bicol is the land of the spicy (Yup, totally made that up!) they embraced their label and lived up to it even on souvenirs. If Baguio has the famous Barrel Man, Bicolanos have their Sili Key chains!

Mini-fans with chili on it! Aaaa too cute!!

Not just in key chains, it has become so iconic that you will probably see it in every souvenir. Haha. This one in ref magnets! :)

Aaaaaa! My love for colors!! <3

Bicol's famous Pili Nuts! Never ever leave Bicol without tasting (or hoarding) jars of these yummy goodies! But be ware, they are expensive. Pili nuts alone are expensive, what more of having it as a commercial product? They go for P200 per jar. So if you just wanna taste it, they have it in small plastics :)

Authentic Bicol Express in a jar! Forget about Ulalam, they don't taste as good as this one. Nothing beats the original!

These fine furniture made of Abaca fibers will surely make a statement in the confinement of your home. It would definitely fit a home that aims a minimalist style with a touch of native handicrafts.

And the standard souvenir in every tourist destination, a statement shirt! I personally like buying shirts because unlike key chains and other stuff, this one I actually get to use on a daily basis. It's so standard that I don't even care if people have seen me wear it consecutively!

Native, hand-woven bags! They're perfect as get-away bags on the beach. They look tropical in every design! :)

These are covered Pili nuts painted in cute designs. How innovative! Try to crack the outer layer and see if there really is a nut inside. Haha.

Try to pinch in some money for souvenirs from your budget. Not only do they serve as a proof of happy memories you spent on the destination, but you also get to help, in a small way, the locals of the area. Your money will go a long way, says the multiplier effect (yet again! hahaha)

Happy Shopping!! <3

Southern Bicol Region Food Guide

Huhuhu foooooood!!!! =)))))))))

After all the traveling, reward yourself with some goodies like these and make your trip even more unforgettable! What's the sense of traveling when you would just find the nearest Mcdo. Shame. So yes, even if you're not for new experience, please please try local foods. That's a conversation starter  when you get back home!

1. Laing

My lola always brags about how she taught Bicol natives a wide array of dishes from Afritada, Sinampalukan, Mechado (etc.) because they only know dishes with coconut milk or "gata" in it. Even so, I was never fond of eating Bicolano food. Huhu. Sorry, Lolo!

Gabi leaves are dried up for a few days over the sun then chopped into tiny bits for that chewy bite. It is then smothered in gata and pepper, making it creamy and spicy at the same time. I never really liked spicy foods but if ever I go to Bicol, I'll promise to try this :)

2. Bicol Express
Another spicy food to get you in the mood! It was named after the train going from Manila to Bicol because once you taste this, you'll run as fast as Bicol Express to the nearest glass of water! Yup, that's how hot and spicy this dish is. Can you see that tid bites of pepper? Huhu, I cannot!!
It also has gata, very Bicolano!

3. Pancit Bato
It's the typical pancit, but usually paired with rice or pandesal. It also has shrimps and pechay as main ingredients. The dish got its name from the town where it originated, Brgy. Bato in Camarines Sur. Nothing special, but what would you lose if you try, yes? The picture above is Pancit Bato Noodle Soup. Yum!!

4. Sili Shake
If you're in for some gastronomical adventure, try their Sili Shake! Mixing hot (as in spicy) with cold is a genius idea, I just don't know if the taste goes with the idea! Haha. Maybe if you put just the right amount of milk, sugar, and ice, you won't succumb to the hotness of this cold drink! Pun intended. hehe
But wait, there's more! If Baguio has strawberry taho, here they have Sili Ice Cream!!

5. Laing Pizza

How about pizza with laing on top? For the Laing and pizza lovers out there, this is called hitting the bird in one stone!

This one I would definitely try, for my love of pizza! Only in Bicol! (or not hehe)
For the vegetarians! :)

6. Laing Pasta
If they have laing pizza, they also have laing pasta! This one looks really yummy, tho. Looks very Italian! Haha. How about you make fun of your friends by serving them this dish, pretending it's an Italian pasta? :) The Bicolanos are so innovative with food, I'm impressed!

7. Pili Ice Cream
Quench your thirst and hunger with this sweet ice cream that's very native in Bicol. I already told you about my Pili experience in my previous post. Haha. Step away from your comfort flavors and go for something different like this one! I bet it tastes like caramel!

8. Sinapot
The popular Maruya, Bicol version! Although I don't know what Maruya is, they say they are almost the same with this one. These are sliced bananas dipped in a batter of egg, flour and water. Not our usual banana cue!

9. Pan de Bicol Express

And the award for the most innovative region when it comes to yummy foods goes to....
BICOL! Legiiiiit!!!!
Imagine having this for breakfast, wild!!!!

10. Tilmok

Tilmok is the Bicolano term for coconut meat. The other main ingredient of the dish is crab meat. The preparation of tilmok starts with the mixing of coconut meat and the crab meat together. Garnishing is added after the meats are mixed. The mixed “meats” are put inside banana leaves and then steamed. This delicious dish is popular among locals and even foreigners. And that's it! Make sure you put them on your bucketlist!! :)
